A Sacred Journey to the Source of the Ganga

Gangotri Dham is one of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage destinations of Uttarakhand and one of the most revered spiritual places in the Himalayas. Set amidst the magnificent Garhwal Himalayas on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, Gangotri brings together spirituality, dramatic mountain scenery and the timeless traditions of the Ganga.

At the heart of Gangotri is the sacred Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The temple stands surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, deodar forests and the rushing waters of the Bhagirathi, creating an atmosphere of remarkable peace and devotion.

Why Visit Gangotri Dham?

For pilgrims, Gangotri is an important destination on the Char Dham Yatra. For nature lovers and adventure seekers, it is also the gateway to some of the most spectacular landscapes in the higher Himalayas.

According to Hindu tradition, Goddess Ganga descended from heaven to earth through the grace of Lord Shiva. The sacred river is known as Bhagirathi at its Himalayan source and later takes the name Ganga after meeting the Alaknanda at Devprayag.

The combination of sacred heritage and pristine mountain scenery makes Gangotri an unforgettable destination for travellers seeking a deeper Himalayan experience.

Gangotri Temple

The beautiful white Gangotri Temple is the spiritual centre of the town. Located beside the Bhagirathi River, the temple attracts pilgrims who come to offer prayers and experience the sacred atmosphere of this Himalayan shrine.
Nearby places of interest include Bhagirath Shila, Surya Kund, Gauri Kund and other spiritually significant sites. The official Uttarakhand Tourism portal also highlights the temple, the Bhagirathi River and surrounding Himalayan landscape as key attractions.

Gangotri to Gomukh

Gangotri is also the starting point for the journey towards Gomukh, the glacial source of the Bhagirathi River. Gomukh lies approximately 19 km from Gangotri and is reached by trekking through the spectacular landscape of Gangotri National Park

For experienced trekkers, the journey can continue towards Tapovan, a high-altitude meadow surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks. The Gomukh–Tapovan route combines spirituality, adventure and extraordinary mountain scenery.

Visitors planning a Gomukh or Tapovan trek should check current permits, access restrictions, weather and trail conditions before travelling.

The Himalayan Experience

Beyond its religious significance, Gangotri offers an opportunity to experience the raw beauty of the Himalayas. Snow-covered peaks, pine and deodar forests, rushing mountain rivers and clear mountain skies create an atmosphere unlike any ordinary holiday destination.

The surrounding region also offers access to destinations such as Bhairon Ghati, Pandava Gufa, Tapovan and Kedartal, making Gangotri an excellent destination for travellers interested in pilgrimage, trekking, photography and nature.

Best Time to Visit Gangotri

Gangotri experiences a seasonal pilgrimage period because of its high-altitude Himalayan location. Uttarakhand Tourism describes the main Char Dham travel season as generally running from May to October, while weather and road conditions can vary significantly.

Before planning your journey, check current temple opening dates, road conditions, weather and local travel advisories.
