Gomukh Tapovan Trek Uttarkashi | Complete Trek Guide

Gomukh Tapovan Trek, Uttarkashi

Journey to the Source of the Ganga

The Gomukh Tapovan Trek is one of the most spectacular high-altitude trekking experiences in Uttarakhand, combining spirituality, glaciers, alpine landscapes and breathtaking Himalayan peaks.

Beginning at Gangotri, the trail follows the Bhagirathi River through the wilderness of Gangotri National Park, passing through Chirbasa and Bhojbasa before reaching Gomukh, the glacial source of the Bhagirathi River. From Gomukh, experienced trekkers can continue towards the magnificent high-altitude meadows of Tapovan, surrounded by some of the most dramatic peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas.

Why Visit Gomukh and Tapovan?

Gomukh is one of the most spiritually significant natural sites in the Himalayas. The Uttarkashi district administration identifies Gomukh as the source of the Bhagirathi River, situated at approximately 4,023 metres above sea level. The river eventually becomes the Ganga after the Bhagirathi meets the Alaknanda at Devprayag.

Tapovan offers a completely different perspective. Located at roughly 4,460 metres, its high-altitude meadows provide spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and are one of the highlights of the trek.

The journey combines the spiritual importance of the Ganga with the raw beauty of glaciers, moraines, mountain streams and high Himalayan wilderness.

Gomukh Tapovan Trek Route

A typical itinerary follows the route:

Gangotri → Chirbasa → Bhojbasa → Gomukh → Tapovan → Bhojbasa → Gangotri

The official Uttarakhand Tourism itinerary describes the trek as a 5-night, 6-day journey from Dehradun, with trekking difficulty ranging from moderate to challenging.

The first trekking sections lead through the Gangotri National Park towards Chirbasa and Bhojbasa. From Bhojbasa, the trail continues towards Gomukh, where trekkers encounter the dramatic glacier landscape and the Bhagirathi River.

The climb from Gomukh towards Tapovan becomes considerably more demanding, with steep sections and high-altitude terrain. Uttarakhand Tourism recommends a guide for the Tapovan section.

Gangotri National Park

Much of the route passes through Gangotri National Park, a vast Himalayan protected area known for conifer forests, glaciers, alpine meadows and high-altitude wildlife.

The park is home to species including bharal (blue sheep), Himalayan monal, musk deer, Himalayan thar, Himalayan snowcock and snow leopard.

The landscape changes dramatically as the trail climbs higher—from forests and river valleys to rugged glacial terrain and open Himalayan meadows.

Gomukh Glacier

The word Gomukh means “cow’s mouth,” referring to the traditional appearance of the glacier’s terminus. It is one of the most important natural and spiritual landmarks associated with the Ganga.

The official Uttarkashi district website places Gomukh at approximately 4,023 metres and describes it as the source of the Bhagirathi River.

From Gangotri, the Gomukh trail is approximately 17–19 km, depending on the route/reference used by the tourism authorities.

Tapovan

Beyond Gomukh lies Tapovan, an extraordinary high-altitude meadow surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. The landscape combines green alpine pastures, rocky terrain, glaciers and spectacular mountain views.

For experienced trekkers, reaching Tapovan is one of the most rewarding parts of the journey. However, the altitude and steep terrain make this section significantly more demanding than the approach to Gomukh.

Permits and Trek Preparation

Because the trek passes through Gangotri National Park, permits are required. The tourism authorities also regulate visitor access to the park. For the Tapovan section, Uttarakhand Tourism states that a guide is required.

Before travelling, check the latest information regarding:

1.Trek permits
2.Daily visitor limits
3.Guide requirements
4.Weather and road conditions
5.Trail accessibility
6.Accommodation and camping regulations
7.Current park restrictions

High-altitude trekking requires proper physical preparation, suitable clothing, trekking equipment, sufficient hydration and careful acclimatisation.

Best Time for the Gomukh Tapovan Trek

The suitable trekking season depends on weather, snow conditions and official access restrictions. Uttarakhand Tourism generally highlights April to October as a good period for experiencing Gangotri National Park, while actual trekking conditions can change considerably throughout the season.

Always verify current conditions and permissions before starting the trek.
